1. CAVENDISH RELATED NEWS

StateConfirms Health Website Security Breach: Officials overseeing the Vermont Health Connect website confirmed there was a security breach on the system last month in which one user got improper access to another user’s Society Security number and other data. Burlington Free Press

VeterinariansWarn of Holiday Dangers for Pets: From the VT Veterinary Medical Association-With the holiday season rapidly approaching, many pet owners are unsure which plants, foods, and decorations are and are not for their pets. Most species of lilies are deadly to cats. In some cases, a small amount of pollen or even one leaf can cause sudden kidney failure. Christmas cactus and Christmas (English) holly can cause significant damage to the stomach and intestinal tract of dogs and cats. Death is not usually reported, but it’s best to keep these plants out of reach. If your pet ingests some of these plants, call your veterinarian immediately. A holiday myth is that Poinsettias and mistletoe are toxic to pets. These plants are not as toxic as urban legend describes. The most dangerous foods at this time of year are chocolates and cocoa, sugarless gum/candies containing Xylitol, fatty meat scraps, and yeast bread dough. Press Release

5 Cent Hike Predictedfor School Tax Rates: Gov. Peter Shumlin advised school leaders Tuesday that Vermonters couldn’t afford back-to-back years in which property tax rates jump significantly to accommodate growth in school spending. If nothing changes, Tax Commissioner Mary Peterson spelled out the tax rate consequences in a report she submitted to legislative leaders on Tuesday. Peterson said these factors mean the residential tax rate that Vermont homeowners pay would need to increase 5 cents per $100 of assessed property value to a new base rate of 99 cents. Starting this Sunday, December 1 Gethsemane Church is moving the time of its Sunday service from 9:30am to 4:00pm.   According to Gethsemane's new priest, the Rev. Todd McKee, this decision grew out of several conversations in the parish about meeting at a time that it more convenient for those with children and for those who work on Sunday mornings.  This is part of an ongoing plan of renewal that started after the church was heavily damaged two years ago during Tropical Storm Irene.  FMI: www.GethsemaneChurchVT.org

3. A DICKENS OF A CHRISTMAS AT CTES
Charles Dickens, the author of "A Christmas Carol," embraced what he called his Carol Philosophy, - "a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of other people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys." With this idea, is it not surprising that his writing, combined with the reign of Queen Victoria, helped to ignite many of the Christmas traditions we celebrate today.

As part of several Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) projects (Young Historians, Hands on History and Honoring Our Heritage) we will be offering a series of workshops at the Cavendish Town Elementary School (CTES) in December- “A Dickens of a Christmas.”

This theme was chosen as many of the people who came to Cavendish in the 1800s were English; the origins of many of our Christmas traditions stem from the Victorian era; and the children were the ones who would start preparing months in advance for the holiday, making many of the ornaments for the tree from items they found around their house and neighborhood.

Each grade will be doing something different: gilding pine cones, creating fortune walnuts, cornucopias, and paper flowers and collecting greens from school property for swags and center pieces.

In true Victorian era fashion, CHS is seeking donations of the following:
-                Scraps of ribbon, lace
-                Gold, silver or white paint
-                Inexpensive paint brushes
-                Glitter
-                Red wax candles
-                Old Christmas cards
-                Glass vases for centerpieces.

If you have items to donate, they can be dropped off at the school office, or bring them to the CHS booth at the Nov. 30 Holiday Fair, which is from 9-3 at CTES.

If you would like to help with the various workshops, please call 802-226-7807 or e-mail margoc@tds.net

5. DONATING TO BRGNS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
The holiday season is upon us.  While there is abundant joy to be found, it is also a time of year that marks significant need in our communities.  This is a very busy time for Black River Good Neighbor Services (BRGNS) as this local non-profit organization prepares to deliver gifts and a full holiday dinner to those in need.  It is estimated that over 135 families from the immediate and surrounding towns will be helped this holiday season.

You can support BRGN in its holiday efforts in several ways:
• Make a donation and BRGNS will provide you with a gift card, which can be personalized so that friends and family know that a donation has been made in their name to BRGNS. See Audrey, Terry or Keeley at the 37B Main Street Store in Ludlow, and ask about the holiday gift cards.

• A Stuff-A-Bus” food drive will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30. Taking place at the Shaw’s shopping center parking lot from 9-3pm, food shelf volunteers will be handing out holiday dinner menus at the event and asking shoppers to help with the foods most needed: canned fruit, cranberry sauce, pickles – olives, mac & cheese, hot chocolate, cookies, tea, cereal (oatmeal), candy, carrots/peas, gravy, stuffing, margarine, corn, green beans, yams, and coffee.

• Volunteers are needed to sort the food as it comes in, and countless other tasks are required to make sure that the Holiday baskets find their way to everyone who needs help.  Please call Audrey at BRGNS’ Food Shelf and Thrift Store, 228-3663 or visit 37B Main Street to ask how you can get involved.

• Donations of money are always welcome and greatly appreciated since much food will still need to be purchased.

BRGNS is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and gifts to it are tax deductible.  FMI: 802-228-3663 or http://www.brgn.org

Donations of $10.00 at the door will keep the series alive and kicking.  FMI 226-7497
