We're into major cleanup. While it was wonderful that so many people and organizations are helping, and everyone loved Cota & Cota’s incredible BBQ, yesterday was a tough day as many are now learning that their homes are a loss or that damage is much more significant than they initially thought.
The National Guard will still be working in our town, but we will be preparing our last meal for them on Sunday night as they will be relocating to the Ludlow Community Center.
We have some incredible crews going out to help clean basements and other areas devastated by the blood. Mold is a big issue, so please be cautious. At noon there will be a post on the blog about mold specifically. In the mean there are some links below to provide you with a lot more information about clean up.
Please do not go site seeing in your car. These roads are very fragile and we don’t need them damaged any further.
Everybody was hurt by this flood, whether you have power and water back or not. Together, with much help from our surrounding towns and organizations, we have put together a variety of resources to help. Use them! There will be plenty of opportunities for each of us to give in the future, but this is the time we must be willing to receive.
So today’s tip when someone is getting on your last nerve is give them a hug and a cookie (or candy bar). Stop by the school to stock up.
Now for the basics to get you through the weekend:
Cavendish Chronicles: Definitely prepare to laugh and enjoy some respite from the aftermath of Irene. Curtain will be at 7 pm tonight but it may be a little late as we need to feed our Guard friends, who will get a chance to share this with us. This is a free event, but we are asking for donations to help with Irene Relief in Cavendish.
Dumpsters: There are now three dumpsters to help people clean up from the flooding. One is located at the Proctorsville Fire Hall, the second at the Proctorsville Green by the Brick building and the third in front of the Cavendish Historical Society Museum. There is no charge for this service.
Meal Schedule: On Saturday and Sunday, breakfast will start at 7 am, lunch at noon and dinner at 5:30. Monday’s schedule will be 10am-7pm. There will be light breakfast foods at 10 with lunch at noon and dinner at 5:30. These activities take place at CTES.
Cavendish Cupboard: We are very fortunate that we are getting some good cleaning supplies now. Lots of food and items to help with this next phase of recovery. The Cupboard hours are while the school is open for meals.
Town Office and Fire Departments: All will be operating on a 9-5 basis this holiday weekend. Last night was the first night many of the firefighters slept in their own beds. Thank a firefighter today as they keep people safe and out of harms way.
School Openings: CTES will remain closed this week due to water and sewage issues as well as the need for safe roads. GMUHS will open on Wednesday August 7. There will only be one bus to GMUHS at 7 am from CTES. There will also be only one bus returning at 3 pm.
Clean Up: We have an incredible group of workers out there cleaning out basements, lawn duty and more. Our first team will be heading out at around 7:30. If you need help, call the school at 226-7758. You can press O to be transferred to the kitchen. You can also stop by the school for help, e-mail margoc@tds.net or go to the Cavendish Facebook page.

Clean up is very hard work. Stop by the school for a meal or a cup of coffee. If you need food sent to your home, let us know so we can get it to you in a timely fashion.
Power and Water: While more and more people are having power restored, there are still areas that are dependent on generators if they are lucky enough to have them. Town water is still a stop and go item, with a “boil” order in place for drinking and cooking when it is working. Lots of water is available at the school, town office and the fire departments. The sewage system was severed so stuff is going directly into the Black River. There are lots of Porta Potties around-town office, fire departments, and the school. Showers are available at the Ludlow Community Center. Have heard they are very nice. If you need shampoo etc., stop by the Cavendish Cupboard.
People’s Bank/Shaws: There is an ATM and starting Tuesday, there will be a mobile bank set up. Shaws is setting up a tent where you will be able to do some limited shopping while they are rebuilding.

Housing: If you have been displaced permanently from the flood, one option maybe SEVCA (Southeastern Vermont Community Action) http://www.sevca.org/emergency-housing-assistance
Replacement of fuel tanks, hot water heaters: As posted on Friday, if you qualify for Weatherization, this program would be able to replace water heaters, furnaces etc. If you have had Weatherization since 1994, they are trying to see if they can replace damaged heaters etc. Keep in mind they are trying to do this, but haven’t had it confirmed. They are keeping a list, so you may want to call and cover your bases. The contact is Marie Grey Weatherization SEVCA. 802- 722-4575.

Most of the churches will be holding services. Don’t know for sure what the Episcopal Church will be doing as their church was heavily damaged.
4 to 4:30: Meditation with Robin Timko. All are welcome to join me for a few moments of meditation and presence for what has unfolded and continues to unfold in our community. Bring a pillow or something comfortable to sit on. There will be time for sharing after our silence.

Federal aid available to Vermonters

Late Thursday evening, President Obama approved disaster assistance for Vermont which will make two types of federal aid available to Vermonters impacted by Tropical Storm Irene. Feel free to forward this email to friends, family, and neighbors struggling to recover from this disaster.
Individual Assistance – Property owners who sustained damages may be eligible for funds to help with repairs, temporary housing, and other assistance. Currently, Individual Assistance is available in Chittenden, Rutland, Washington and Windsor Counties. It is expected that more counties will become eligible as FEMA completes damage assessments.
Public Assistance – FEMA will cover the cost to towns for repairing and restoring service to infrastructure. These funds are available to all Vermont counties except Grande Isle. Towns should be in touch with the Vermont Agency of Transportation for more information.
To determine your eligibility, property owners, businesses, and non-profits should contact FEMA as soon as possible at:

Friday Mid Day Update

People know they don't have flood insurance, are finding that their insurance will not cover their damage, or have very high deductibles. Because this was a flood, and who knows what was in the water, the longer it's left untouched, the more likely you will have mold and other problems. This then creates a health hazard. Please be sure to use proper gloves, masks, ventilation etc. We are working to get these at the Cavendish Cupboard. There are some limited tools to help with clean up at the town office and the fire stations. However, a helicopter just landed so maybe there are more cleaning tools in this shipment.
FEMA was here yesterday assessing damage at various residences. They were telling people to take pictures, document what is being done (include expenses, time spent by you and volunteers) but go ahead and starting cleaning up.
Tom Kennedy asked that following be included in the next update: Cavendish and Proctorsville will each be getting a roll-off dumpster and packer truck for Household Flood Debris ONLY starting tomorrow. Disposal will be free. Eligible items for the dumpster include storm-ravaged furniture, water-logged rugs, ruined clothing and mattresses, etc. HOUSEHOLD items only. No trees, branches. Storm-damaged appliances will be accepted. I’m assuming that is in addition to the dumpsters that are already located in Cavendish and Proctorsville, but I will need to check on this.

Cavendish Recovery Update 9/2/11

Anybody else wondering what day of the week it is and whether you have clean underwear for tomorrow? I sure hope I’m not the only one. Anyway, lots of progress is being made.
Our young adults are just terrific. We had a group go on a search and rescue party for a lost teen in Brattleboro, attend soccer practice, come back and were pouring milk at 8 pm for the guard. Thank you Luke for organizing the kids for an intense soccer match. Many of our kids are helping out-setting tables, working on road crews to get the back roads open, staffing places for the fire department and helping to deliver food and water to distant parts of town.
We hear from a lot of people that they’d just like to get back to “normal.” Well, we can’t go back to the way it was. Instead, we will have a much stronger community. Many of us have made new friends that will last the rest of our lives and in short, we will have a different community but it will be richer and better for this experience.
We’re all getting a bit punchy and/or edgy. If someone says something and you want to deck’um, count to 10, and let it go. Chalk it up to Irene (and not Irene Pearson who is doing an amazing job) and move on. Girlfriends got a lotta check marks by her name.
So here are the highlights until noontime, when I’ll post morning updates directly to www.cavendishvt.blogspot.com
Trash Dumpsters: This morning a trash dumpster will be placed in front of the Cavendish Historical Society Museum in Cavendish and another for Proctorsville will be placed by the Brick building at the Green. There is no fee being charged for dumping and there is no need to do sorting. The transfer station continues to remain closed. Because of the location of the dumpster in front of the Museum, it will not be opened this coming Sunday.
National Guard: The soldiers will continue to work through the weekend. There was a crew down on Davis Road and work continues on the Glidden/Churchill/Cavendish Canyon (everybody has their own name for the spot by the Duttonsville School). They are making progress as are the many local citizens who are rebuilding many of the back roads. We understand that Brook Rd will most likely be up and running by tomorrow night.
Power and Water: Yes, you maybe taking a shower only to have no water. This is a very difficult situation. As they do repairs, they are looking for other problems. It is very possible that those on town water have it one minute and not the next. You can shower at the Ludlow Community Center from 7 am to 8 pm. Please refrain from 8 pm since the guard is generally going then. Water is available at the school, firehouses and town office. We’re also getting people to drive water to all areas of town to make sure people have what they need.
Power may also need to be stopped to make for safe work conditions and we know that some people are still with out it.
Flood Warning: Fortunately, the flood warning posted was dropped and only a few raindrops fell in our area. Whew!
Donations/Cavendish Cupboard: We had another air drop yesterday so we’re doing great with water and MREs. Many donations are being made to the Cavendish Cupboard and people are making good use of it. We do have need for the following:
• toilet paper and paper towels
• Gloves for cleaning
• Masks
• LED Flashlights
• alkaline batteries
• Baby formula-soy based (we have a family that needs this)
Cleaning: Now that intense cleaning and clearing is underway, a word of caution-water and electricity don’t mix. Use caution. We’ll have dumpsters in place, and people are volunteering to help. Let’s work together and get it done. It is isn’t easy to see a lot of your possession having to go in the dumpster. However, it’s just stuff. It’s replaceable but your not. We are working to get cleaning supplies at the Cavendish Cupboard thanks to Jenn Harper and others. If you need help, call us at 226-7758 or e-mail t We now have work crews that can help you.

Cleaning up, trying to work, taking care of kids and just having to deal with the stress of the situation is a lot, so know there is always good food and company at the school.
Proctorsville Fire Dept Weekend Schedule: They will be operating from 9-5 Saturday –Monday. Haven’t heard directly, but suspect Cavendish will be doing something similar.
Town Office Weekend Schedule: They will be keeping the town office open this weekend with staff taking shifts trying to answer questions and helping you find what you need. Please be patient. If you get a busy signal, it means they are helping a neighbor.
Work Crews: We are thrilled to have teams of workers going out to help those in need with clean up. See Help Needed/Volunteers below.
Shaws: The following were posted on the Rebuild Okemo Valley Facebook page, “As far as Shaw's Goes....I can say that we'll have a three thousand square foot tent in the parking lot in a couple of days carrying staple items from Grocery, produce, meat, dairy and other items to be determined. It will be VERY scaled down but we're trying to meet the needs of the immediate community. Hope to be open by Sunday morning at the latest....keep your fingers crossed....we're all in this together. Darren Williams, Store Director of the Beautiful Island of Ludlow VT. Ralph Pace posted the following to the same site:
1 - Shaws, according to recent info from the Town Manager, will open a large, tented with sides facility outside the Shaws Market. Timing a little questionable but it should be within several weeks. What it will carry in terms of food stock is unknown at this moment.
2 - Peoples United Bank will continue the ATM and add a "trailer" banking facility will renovation takes place
3 - Rite Aide is handling drugs in Springfield and will deliver to some point in Ludlow for pickup
4 - the Ludlow Transfer Station will be open Friday, Sat, Sun, and Mon. Will accept all refuse from residents at no charge-ask that you separate it for recycling
5 - there will be large dumpsters placed at the Ludlow Community Center and in the town parking lot across from Heritage Credit Union sometime next week for use by area property owners
6 - the village water supply was NOT affected by Irene; it's completely safe to drink
7 - the village sewage system was compromised by Irene but the structural integrity of it is okay; it will be returned to full processing capability in incremental steps. Sewage is being chlorinated now.

Meal Schedule: Breakfast (7am); Lunch (noon) and dinner (5:30) at the school. Thank you Doug Haskel, Amy Jones, Sysco and 56 Main Street for a delicious turkey dinner. Thank you to the Chester women who made it possible for a number of the Cavendish crew to sleep in for the breakfast shift. Tonight’s dinner will be provided by Cota and Cota. It will be a BBQ! Cleaning up, trying to work, taking care of kids and just having to deal with the stress of the situation is a lot, so know there is always good food and company at the school.
Proctorsville Fire Dept Weekend Schedule: They will be operating from 9-5 Saturday –Monday. Haven’t heard directly, but suspect Cavendish will be doing something similar.
Town Office Weekend Schedule: They will be keeping the town office open this weekend with staff taking shifts trying to answer questions and helping you find what you need. Please be patient. If you get a busy signal, it means they are helping a neighbor.

Shaws: The following were posted on the Rebuild Okemo Valley Facebook page, “As far as Shaw's Goes....I can say that we'll have a three thousand square foot tent in the parking lot in a couple of days carrying staple items from Grocery, produce, meat, dairy and other items to be determined. It will be VERY scaled down but we're trying to meet the needs of the immediate community. Hope to be open by Sunday morning at the latest....keep your fingers crossed....we're all in this together. Darren Williams, Store Director of the Beautiful Island of Ludlow VT. Ralph Pace posted the following to the same site:
1 - Shaws, according to recent info from the Town Manager, will open a large, tented with sides facility outside the Shaws Market. Timing a little questionable but it should be within several weeks. What it will carry in terms of food stock is unknown at this moment.
2 - Peoples United Bank will continue the ATM and add a "trailer" banking facility will renovation takes place
3 - Rite Aide is handling drugs in Springfield and will deliver to some point in Ludlow for pickup
4 - the Ludlow Transfer Station will be open Friday, Sat, Sun, and Mon. Will accept all refuse from residents at no charge-ask that you separate it for recycling
5 - there will be large dumpsters placed at the Ludlow Community Center and in the town parking lot across from Heritage Credit Union sometime next week for use by area property owners
6 - the village water supply was NOT affected by Irene; it's completely safe to drink
7 - the village sewage system was compromised by Irene but the structural integrity of it is okay; it will be returned to full processing capability in incremental steps. Sewage is being chlorinated now.

The Cavendish Chronicles will be repeated on Saturday night at 7 pm. It may be a late in starting because we need to feed the guard. We will be asking for donations to help with the relief. Every penny helps. And if Sandra ever makes a comment about needing material for a play 50 years from now, gag her. Actually, Sandra is doing an amazing job helping in the kitchen, working on rewrites of the play to incorporate this new chapter in our town’s history and finding new cast to replace those who can’t be there. Where else but Cavendish can you have dinner theater in the middle of a massive relief effort?

Thursday Mid Day Update
The Cavendish Connects website now includes much of what was included on this blog as well as a calendar of Cavendish events. The new blog, “The Dish,” includes the Cavendish Update as well as on-going information.
Many people are coming in now as they are able to actually get here. However, everyone seems to believe that water and supplies should be saved for those who need it most. The fact is, we all need it and we have sufficient amounts for everyone. So please stop by the school, fire stations to pick up water. The "Cavendish Cupboard" is open for business at the school starting at 7 am and going through dinner.
We now have teams of people heading out into the outreaches of town bringing water and supplies. Please let us know if you need something or if you think someone in your area does.
The Proctorsville Post Office is back open. Depot street now has sufficient gravel in front of the bridge to stop people from driving over it.
The Cavendish Baptist Church will be holding a prayer service tonight at 7pm.
Many of you may have seen the helicopter land in Proctorsville. Yes, the Governor has come for a visit.
The Ludlow Medical Center says that they will be out of their location for about a month. They have temporary headquarters at the new Dental Office. Use their regular number to reach them. They will let you know if your provider is working out of another space.
People are looking tired today and a bit overwhelmed. That's too be expected. If we take it a day at a time we'll be okay.

Sept 1: Thursday Recovery Update

While there is much information to pass on, there are some moments to share. Yesterday, a little girl brought her fiddle to school so Bob Naess could give her a fiddle lesson. A very apt pupil, she then proceeded to spend quite a bit of time practicing. None of us will forget Peggy Svec’s “lecture” to the National Guard men staying in the kindergarten room. Basically, no messin’ with the toys and lights out. Still don’t know who slept in the dollhouse. Having fresh fruit delivered. Pastor Joseph and Jessica spending the entire afternoon and evening at the school. Jessica’s face painting was so fabulous, the adults as well as the children were decked out in the most amazing designs. Next time, I’m going for the shark one. Hearing “yes m’am,” and “no sir” so often that Sgt. Peters was nicknamed Sgt Sweetie Sir. He’s a great sport about it. A special thanks to the Chester American Legion who brought dinner to our town last night and to George, whose last name I’m forgetting, who made the best biscuits and sausage gravy. One of the soldiers even asked for the recipe! And a very special thanks to the many people of Cavendish, who are providing support and encouragement to each other.
In trying to answer the many questions we receive, it’s important to note that information changes rapidly. It is hard to get through to the town office, but they are working very long hours. If they don’t respond, it’s because they are helping someone. The school can be reached a lot easier since the phones have been restored. You can call 226-7758. If there isn’t an answer, press O to get transferred to the kitchen, where there are a number of people that can help.
At this stage, many people are very tired from trying to deal with insurance companies, clean, get to work, figure out new routes to work, not getting sufficient sleep and in general nerves can be easily frayed. Things aren’t going to get done quicker by trying to blame someone for the situation. So besides checking to see what your neighbor might need, be generous with the hugs, smiles and laughter. We are making progress.
Power and Water: For a while yesterday, town water was up and running. Unfortunately, it stopped late in the day. The bottom line is that the damage to the water, sewer and power system was very extensive and this is not an easy fix. As work is being done, power may have to be cut off to protect the workers. We know that many are still without power and water. The firehouses and school have plenty of water. Remember that as the water is returning, it’s on a “boil order” until further notice. Showers can be taken at the Ludlow Community Center.
Where to take trash: The clean up phase is starting to kick into high gear. Unfortunately, the lack of power made it impossible for the transfer station to operate yesterday. People are asking if they will have to pay for trash disposal. While Fire Chief Glidden, also a Select board member, said he thinks it’s important for the Select Board to wave the fees given the circumstances, the Select Board will need to make that decision.
Mary O’Brien, Recycling Coordinator from SWCRPC sent the following information about where you can take your trash: As an option, anyone can bring their trash and recycling to the Springfield Transfer Station at 135 Fairground Road. No car sticker needed. People just have to purchase coupons for the trash fee at participating stores. The following is from the District’s website:
Regular trash disposal: ticket system. $11.25 per sheet of 25 (valued at $0.45 per ticket) Trash is weighed. One ticket per 4 pounds, with a minimum of 1 ticket per visit.

FEMA: In order to qualify for FEMA, we need to document volunteer hours. There is a sheet at the school, but you can also e-mail them to margoc@tds.net and they’ll be added to the list. Please take photos. Again this is important documentation.

Dinner tonight will be supplied by the Springfield Restaurant 56 Main in conjunction with SYSCO. Thank you Doug Haskell and Amy Jones. The Chester crew is giving a number of us a chance to sleep in this morning by making the breakfast with some Cavendish volunteers. Thanks to Jane Pixley, there is Cavendish maple syrup to go with the pancakes. Black River Good Neighbors in Ludlow is open. We’ve been asked how long the school will operate as a shelter. At this point, we’re taking it day by day.
Medical Care: The Ludlow Health Center (which I confused with BRGN yesterday and called Black River Health Center) is operational at the dental clinic site (their old location). They are accepting walk ins. You can reach them at 875-1040. Fill Rite Aid prescriptions in Springfield or take them to Ludlow Pharmacy.

* The helicopter landed and the Red Cross arrived. We have wonderful fresh fruit, lots of water and a variety of supplies. Come for dinner starting at 5:30 and take home what you need. There is a truck on its way from a church down south bringing cleaning supplies and other items needed for the clean up.
* We know that many want to help and many need help. We're starting both an online list and will keep a copy at the town office. Please e-mail margoc@tds.net with your needs as a homeowner/renter or if there is a service you can volunteer for. Be specific. For example-can donate five hours on Sept 3 to chain saw.
