1.Enter Your Favorite Photograph of Cavendish for the 2010 Community Calendar
The CCCA is going into its 5th year of Cavendish Calendars, and it's Second Annual Calendar Contest! Last years' calendar was comprised of wonderful photographs submitted by community members of all ages and we all look forward to viewing and voting on this year's submissions in June. Pick up an entry form at the Town Office, Crows Bakery or the CTES and drop your photo off at the Cavendish Town Office from May 11th until June 5th.
2. Cavendish Community Fund Announces Awards and New Application Deadline
The Cavendish Community Fund awarded two grants recently. The first went to the Cavendish Town Elementary School to provide more fresh fruits and vegetables to the children as they learn about the farm-to-school food connection. The grant will also cover the cost of VT FEED (Food Education Every Day) to work with parents and teachers to create sustainable goals for long-term nutritional education at CTES. By incorporating locally produced foods into the school lunch menu and tying the improved nutrition to classroom lessons, the school hopes to positively influence life-long eating patterns. Parent volunteers have worked with the teachers at CTES to previously plant a small garden at the school, and have run several successful programs on different foods. CCF is pleased to support this extended effort to provide long-term nutritional education at CTES.
The second grant went to the Cavendish Fletcher Community Library to help elevate community awareness of the library and its amenities. During spring 2009, librarian Katalin Welch will present several classic movies accompanied by a small theme-related meal. For example, the movie Titanic will be shown accompanied by a bill of fare based on the original menus that the ship presented to each passenger class on the evening of its ill-fated voyage. Since the library is located in the same building as the town elementary school, children are well aware of its presence. However, Cavendish adults are less aware of what the library has to offer. Therefore, the movie series will be aimed at adults and will try to enhance visibility in the community.
CCF has set a deadline for spring 2009 grant applications. They must be received by close of business on Friday, May 1, 2009. Submissions should be sent to CCF, P.O. Box 605, Cavendish, VT 05142. For more information about CCF or the application process, please call Peter LaBelle at 226-7250, or Barbara Dickey at 226-7187.
3. Cavendish Fletcher Community Library Book Club
The Cavendish Fletcher Communiy Library Book Club is reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This book takes place in a society where books are outlawed and firemen are people whose job it is to burn books. What happens if one of the so called firemen decides to read a book instead of burning it? The book club will meet to discuss this book on Saturday April 18 at 1:00PM. Copies are available at the library circulation desk.
4. Chorus Concert
The Springfield Community Chorus will present it’s Spring Concert ~~Songs of Praise, Peace and Hope ~~~ on Palm Sunday April 5, 2009 - 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Springfield, VT. Candace Montesi of Proctorsville directs the chorus, and several Cavendish residents sing in the chorus. The program will feature “Rejoice in the Lamb” by Benjamin Britten, and the program will conclude with a Medley from “Les Miserables”. Noelle Gignoux of Cavendish will be a featured soloist singing the part of Cosette. All are welcome to this delightful afternoon of music.

Earth hour was conceived by WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. Earth Hour will next take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm, local time. http://www.earthhour.org/

1. Spring, Earth Week, Old Home Day and the 1930’s
How lovely to see grass again, even if it is brown. Today marks the first day of spring, when the sunshine and warmer temps encourage many people to clean out cupboards, wash window and make more than your usual trips to the transfer station. It is also the time of year when the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) begins to offer new programs.
Given the current economy, and CHS’s role in providing information about town history to help understand the present and plan for the future, the Society has selected the 1930’s as their theme for this year. As part of Cavendish Earth Week (see schedule of events in item 5) CHS will be running a workshop on April 20, Depression Era sustainable housekeeping tips (clean green for cheap), where you can learn some interesting things about Cavendish history along with some ways to save money and help keep the green in our Green Mountain state.
Old Home Day will be held on the 4th of July. Yes, there will be the plant sale, a new exhibit at the Stone Church and lots of activities on the Cavendish Green. By popular request, and in keeping with the 1930’s, a tag sale (including a bartering booth) will be part of this year’s activities. Cavendish/Proctorsville residents and second homeowners can obtain a tag sale spot by sending $5 to CHS, PO Box 472, Cavendish VT 05142 by June 1. Space is limited, so it’s first come first served. After June 1, any available slots will be open to surrounding communities. Be advised that you will be responsible for bringing tables, chairs and for clean up after the event. Whatever you bring in, must be taken home by you if doesn’t sell.
Local businesses, artists, schools, library, churches, fire departments, and community based organizations who are interested in booth space should contact margoc@tds.net or call 802-226-7807 in order to reserve space.

1. Select Board Meeting
The Select Board (SB) met for their organizational and regular meeting on March 9. James Ballantine was elected as the Chair of the SB, with George Timko as vice chair and Dan Churchill as Clerk of the SB. Rich Svec was appointed Town Manager for the next five years. Currently none of the three lister positions are filled. Jane Pixley, Town Clerk, will serve as lister, with Diane McNamara, who works in the town office, filling the second slot on an interim basis. An advertisement will be posted to see if any of the three positions can be filled. McNamara pointed out that the town staff trains listers all the time, but the turnover is very high for these positions.
Water Filtration Project: In spite of parts not showing up and other problems, the filtration project continues to move forward. The projected date for being on-line is expected to be some time in the spring. Once the filtration is installed, even though the source will be clean water, the pipes and tanks that carry the water need to be flushed and cleaned. This process could take several months. Svec said that water users would start noticing a difference in mid June, with full impact occurring by mid summer. The second well will not be tested, as required by the state, until after the water filtration unit is on-line and operational.
Proctorsville Curb and Sidewalk Project: The funds are available for completing this project. Bids for Clerk of the Works (construction manager) and a construction firm will be underway shortly, with work beginning shortly after the Cavendish Elementary School has recessed for the summer.
2. Welcome Spring
The Cavendish Historical Society and the Cavendish Community and Conservation Association (CCCA) will be holding a “Welcome Spring” Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner, Silent Auction and Bingo fundraiser on March 21. Dinner begins at 6 pm, with Bingo starting at 7 pm.
The Silent Auction features a number of wonderful items to help you get ready for planting, vacation this summer, or enjoy some incredible food. There is one very unique item, thanks to Bob Naess of Black River Militaria. You have to be present to bid on this item, but if you are a history fan and always wanted an up close and personal experience with some of Bob’s collection, this is your chance. Haven’t a clue what this is about, well come play a card or two of bingo, have some corned beef (or a veggie option) and see for yourself
