Relax in the grass on your blanket or favorite lawn chair – have a picnic or just listen to the music.

Cavendish Man Missing

Rutland Herald Jul 17, 2010
State police search for missing Cavendish man
By Susan Smallheer

CAVENDISH — A 48-year-old Cavendish man, who was last seen at the local mill where he works more than a month ago, is the object of a search by Vermont State Police.

Friends of Bryan Gomez reported him missing to the state police on July 6, and Lt. Todd Illingworth said that the police were making a public appeal now because their efforts to locate him had been unsuccessful so far.

Illingworth said that Gomez was employed at Gilcris Log Homes in Cavendish and had not reported to work since June 9.

Police described Gomez as 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes.

Gomez was known to hitchhike along Route 131 and Route 106, making the trip to Springfield to visit friends and family.

Illingworth said that Gomez was a “very local man” who often hitchhiked around the area, including along Route 103.

“He has personal issues,” Illingworth said, adding that there is no indication of foul play or that Gomez may have wanted to harm himself.

“There’s nothing that points in that direction,” he said.

The police lieutenant said there was such a long delay in reporting Gomez missing because he lived alone and was an independent person.

Attempts to reach people at Gilcris Enterprises were unsuccessful Friday.

If anyone has any information about Gomez, or information about his whereabouts, they are asked to contact the Vermont State Police barracks in Brattleboro at 257-7101.

3. More Than Flowers-Caring for Grave Stones Workshop
Around Memorial Day, many people leave flowers on the graves of families and friends for the summer season. Unfortunately, a number of the stone markers are showing signs of weathering that could easily be cleaned. An additional 10 minutes of time, when leaving flowers, and a little bit of cleaning, can help preserve the stone marker for many generations to come.

While many people pay for “perpetual care,” this is often limited to just caring for the grounds of the cemetery and not necessarily the individual grave. Perpetual care only works if there are continual numbers of people being buried at a cemetery so there is a regular influx of money. This is a growing problem throughout the United States, as more people are opting for alternatives to burial in a cemetery.

To help people care for their family and friend’s memorial markers, the Cavendish Historical Society and the Cavendish Cemetery Commission are offering a workshop on cleaning stones on July 18 (Sunday) from noon to 3 pm at the High Street Cemetery in Cavendish. All materials will be supplied. The focus of this workshop is on newer stones. This workshop is part of the Cavendish Historical Society’s Cemetery Preservation Project, supported in part by a grant from the Cavendish Community and Conservation Association (CCCA). For more information call 802-226-7807 or e-mail margoc@tds.net

4. Cavendish Concert on the Green Continues with Gypsy Reel
The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association invites everyone to spend an evening having fun on the Proctorsville Green listening to the continuing summer music series on Wednesday, July 21st at 6:00 p.m. when CCCA presents Gypsy Reel.

For over twenty years they have been acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Gypsy Reel, in their own words, is not a rock band that Celts, but a Celt band that rocks. They play high energy, stirring music rooted in the Celtic tradition but garnered from the whole world.

This will be the third of six concerts that are held on consecutive Wednesday nights in July and August. CCCA encourages all area residents and visitors to join their friends and neighbors in front of the gazebo on the green. Bring a blanket or a comfortable chair, have a picnic, or just lay back and relax on the grass. It’s a fun way to enjoy the summer weather and either reconnect with old friends or make new ones.

As always, the concerts are free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine. In case of inclement weather the performance will move to the Cavendish town elementary school on Main Street just up from the Green.

5. Vermont Endurance Ride and Vermont 100 Pass Through Cavendish on Saturday

7. CCF Announces 2010 Grants
The Cavendish Community Fund announced that it has awarded grants to two local organizations for community oriented educational projects. The Fund has distributed grants twice each year for the last four years.

The first grant was given to the Cavendish Fletcher Community Library to expand its collection of eBooks. The library’s main mission focuses on the literacy of Cavendish residents, and it continues to expand its traditional collections in order to meet this need. However, the library recognizes the expanding trend towards electronic books and electronic readers. Faced with an onslaught of twenty first century technologies that are revolutionizing the library field, Cavendish is trying to maintain a competitive edge. It currently offers audio books for download onto home computers and MP-3 players, and finds that it is time to venture into the world of eBooks. With the grant from CCF the library will begin an innovative pilot program with schoolchildren and eBooks.

The second award is to the Cavendish Historical Society to fund two projects. In the first, the Society will purchase equipment and supplies so that citizen volunteers can clean gravestones in the oldest cemeteries in town. Some of these cemeteries date back to the revolutionary war and many stones have been neglected for decades. The second project continues an educational class that the Society began last year in the local elementary school. Last year Society members taught children about life in Cavendish during the 1930s. That class was very well received and therefore members will expand it in the coming year to discuss life during the 1940s.

The CCF sponsors educational, cultural and artistic projects, programs or events to benefit the citizens and residents of Cavendish. Anyone can apply for a grant so long as the project meets the criteria published by CCF on its website, www.Cavendishccca.org. Application forms and instructions are found on the website. The application deadline for the next grant round will be announced in the fall.

Select Board Agenda for 7/12/10

The following items will be on the 7/12/10 Select Board Meeting Agenda, which meets at 6:30 pm at the Town Office:

• Ned Swanberg of the Vermont Flood Plain Management Program will be in attendance and will give a 15 minute presentation on Fluvial Erosion Hazards (FEH) specific to the Black River Valley in Cavendish. The Cavendish Planning Commission is considering incorporating FEH language into the Cavendish Flood Hazard Regulations which are being updated. The PC has spent considerable time getting information and discussing FEH issues in the past several months and will likely be requesting the Select Board to consider re-adoption of the Flood Hazard Regulations with needed changes this autumn.

• Town Manager to give summary description of financial intricacies of establishment of a present day town tax rate and to present a proposed FY 2010-2011 Cavendish Tax Rate Schedule for Board review and approval. The tax rate under
consideration is for the fiscal period July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011.

• Town Manager to update the Board on delinquent tax collection activities.

• Town Manager to reintroduce the Board to considerations of an Appraisal Update or Town-wide Reappraisal. This matter was last considered at Town Meeting on March 2, 2010 but was then tabled. Now that the 2010 Grand List is determined and the Town has gone through grievance and BOCA considerations, it is appropriate for the Selectmen to re-examine the issues and consider further action.

• Review progress on realignment of lower Chubb Hill Road.

• Town Manager to review results of applications for 2010 highway grants with the Board
and anticipated work activities relating to same.

• Town Manager to discuss disposition of a small fund started in July of 2003.

1. Cavendish Update/Please Read
The roots of the Cavendish Update date back to 2003 as a way to keep people informed about the “quarry project.” It wasn’t long before it became a means to provide town and community information as well. Newspapers have come and gone, yet the Update has grown in the number of subscribers and has had an on-line presence since 2008 at http://cavendishvt.blogspot.com/

The Update has been designed to cover Cavendish (including the villages of Cavendish and Proctorsville) news, activities and is used to alert the community in emergent situations. E-mail posts are limited to once a week on Friday and emergency posts as needed. Non-emergent information can be posted to the blog at any time.

The Cavendish Organization Website Directory is now included at the blog and is no longer posted the first of the month. Note that certain organizations, such as Green Mountain Union High School and Fletcher Memorial Library, which are not located in Cavendish, are included because they include the town in their charter.

For many years, the Update was a volunteer effort. In the last several years, the Cavendish Community and Conservation Association (CCCA) and the Cavendish Historical Society have become a sponsor, which has made it possible to expand coverage. As generous as the sponsors are, these funds cover less than half of the actual costs of producing this free news source. If the Update is going to continue, additional sponsorships are needed.

Cavendish is one of the few towns in Vermont that doesn’t have a website. Over the years of doing the Update, a great deal of information has been collected, which would make it relatively easy to establish a site. Further, with the costs of web hosting now so low, as well as the ease of use of free shareware to create a site, Cavendish and area businesses should not be without a web presence. However, some funding is needed to develop a website(s) and maintain it.

If you or your organization is interested in being a sponsor of the Cavendish Update or seeing the development of a Cavendish website, please e-mail margoc@tds.net or call 802-226-7807.

5. Chris Kleeman Kicks Off Cavendish Concert Series
The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association wants to remind everyone that the annual summer music series kicks off on Wednesday, July 7th at 6:00 p.m. on the Proctorsville Green with Chris Kleeman, the Vermont based master blues singer and legendary song stylist.

A performer of great energy and focus, Kleeman provides a unique opportunity to see and hear the real thing; an artist of high energy and gritty musical performance, who's been matched up to perform in shows with musicians such as B.B. King, Taj Mahal, John Hammond, George Thorogood, Johnny Winter, Leon Redbone, ... the list goes on and on.

This will be the first of six concerts held again this year on Wednesday nights in July and August. All concerts are free and open to the public, so join your neighbors and friends in front of the gazebo on the green. Bring a comfortable chair, a blanket, maybe a picnic, or just kick back and relax on the grass.

The summer concert series has a long history in Proctorsville and many area residents reserve Wednesday evenings to listen to the live music. As always, the concerts will be held rain or shine, and will move to the Cavendish town elementary school in case of inclement weather.
