3. More Than Flowers-Caring for Grave Stones Workshop
Around Memorial Day, many people leave flowers on the graves of families and friends for the summer season. Unfortunately, a number of the stone markers are showing signs of weathering that could easily be cleaned. An additional 10 minutes of time, when leaving flowers, and a little bit of cleaning, can help preserve the stone marker for many generations to come.
While many people pay for “perpetual care,” this is often limited to just caring for the grounds of the cemetery and not necessarily the individual grave. Perpetual care only works if there are continual numbers of people being buried at a cemetery so there is a regular influx of money. This is a growing problem throughout the United States, as more people are opting for alternatives to burial in a cemetery.
To help people care for their family and friend’s memorial markers, the Cavendish Historical Society and the Cavendish Cemetery Commission are offering a workshop on cleaning stones on July 18 (Sunday) from noon to 3 pm at the High Street Cemetery in Cavendish. All materials will be supplied. The focus of this workshop is on newer stones. This workshop is part of the Cavendish Historical Society’s Cemetery Preservation Project, supported in part by a grant from the Cavendish Community and Conservation Association (CCCA). 4. Cavendish Concert on the Green Continues with Gypsy Reel
The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association invites everyone to spend an evening having fun on the Proctorsville Green listening to the continuing summer music series on Wednesday, July 21st at 6:00 p.m. when CCCA presents Gypsy Reel.
For over twenty years they have been acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Gypsy Reel, in their own words, is not a rock band that Celts, but a Celt band that rocks. They play high energy, stirring music rooted in the Celtic tradition but garnered from the whole world.
This will be the third of six concerts that are held on consecutive Wednesday nights in July and August. CCCA encourages all area residents and visitors to join their friends and neighbors in front of the gazebo on the green. Bring a blanket or a comfortable chair, have a picnic, or just lay back and relax on the grass. It’s a fun way to enjoy the summer weather and either reconnect with old friends or make new ones.
As always, the concerts are free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine. In case of inclement weather the performance will move to the Cavendish town elementary school on Main Street just up from the Green.
5. Vermont Endurance Ride and Vermont 100 Pass Through Cavendish on Saturday

7. CCF Announces 2010 Grants
The Cavendish Community Fund announced that it has awarded grants to two local organizations for community oriented educational projects. The Fund has distributed grants twice each year for the last four years.
The first grant was given to the Cavendish Fletcher Community Library to expand its collection of eBooks. The library’s main mission focuses on the literacy of Cavendish residents, and it continues to expand its traditional collections in order to meet this need. However, the library recognizes the expanding trend towards electronic books and electronic readers. Faced with an onslaught of twenty first century technologies that are revolutionizing the library field, Cavendish is trying to maintain a competitive edge. It currently offers audio books for download onto home computers and MP-3 players, and finds that it is time to venture into the world of eBooks. With the grant from CCF the library will begin an innovative pilot program with schoolchildren and eBooks.
The second award is to the Cavendish Historical Society to fund two projects. In the first, the Society will purchase equipment and supplies so that citizen volunteers can clean gravestones in the oldest cemeteries in town. Some of these cemeteries date back to the revolutionary war and many stones have been neglected for decades. The second project continues an educational class that the Society began last year in the local elementary school. Last year Society members taught children about life in Cavendish during the 1930s. That class was very well received and therefore members will expand it in the coming year to discuss life during the 1940s.
The CCF sponsors educational, cultural and artistic projects, programs or events to benefit the citizens and residents of Cavendish. Anyone can apply for a grant so long as the project meets the criteria published by CCF on its website, www.Cavendishccca.org. Application forms and instructions are found on the website. The application deadline for the next grant round will be announced in the fall.
