Learn to Stencil at the Free Hands on History Workshop
The
art of stenciling goes back to the cave paintings of Spain and France, where
someone placed a hand on the cave wall and blew pulverized pigment around it.
The Egyptians adorned tombs using stencils, while Greeks and Romans used them
to create mosaics and to create signs. The Chinese developed paper stencils due
to the invention of paper around 105 A,D. These were used extensively to mass
produce images of the Buddha during the six dynasties of China (221 AD-618
AD). During this time, intricate
and colorful patterns stenciled on the fashionable materials worn by the
wealthy became all the rage in the East. It was the Japanese, however, who
refined the stencil technique further by perfecting a method for holding the
delicate parts of the stencil together by means of a network of human hair,
later replaced by threads of silk. As trade
routes were established, stenciling made its way to Europe. Consequently, when
the first colonists came to America they brought stenciling techniques with
them.
Two
distinct styles of wall stenciling arose in New England between the
Revolutionary War and the turn of the 19th century, the period of time when the
Coffeens, Proctors and Duttons settled in Cavendish. In one, stencils cover
most of a wall's surface to replace wall paper that few could afford. Examples
of this can still be seen in several houses in Cavendish. A photograph of a
Cavendish home is available on-line at the Cavendish VT Facebook page. The other technique was border stencils. Stenciling was also applied to
furniture, textiles, floors, wooden trays, table coverings etc.
On
Oct. 20, the Cavendish Historical Society’s (CHS) Hands on History program will
be holding a free workshop at the Cavendish Town Elementary School in
Proctorsville, from 9:30-11:30, which includes creating your own stencils,
along with other early settler crafts of quilting, candle making and cider
pressing. This workshop is open to the community thanks to a grant from the
Cavendish Community Fund, a project of the Cavendish Community and Conservation
Association. FMI: 226-7807 or margoc@tds.net

BRGNS Fall Rummage Sale a Hugh Success
Black
River Good Neighbor Services held its Fall Rummage Sale at Fletcher Farm over
the weekend of September 28 -30.
Despite three days of
uncooperative weather, the sale was an unqualified success.
“A big
success” is how Audrey Bridge, Executive Director of the BRGNS Thrift Shop and Food
Shelf, described the event. “We couldn’t believe that we had lines of people
standing in the rain waiting for the doors to open on Friday morning”. Peter LaBelle, President of the BRGNS
Board, added, “The flow of customers was steady from the opening on Friday
until closing on Sunday.” Audrey
continued, saying, “We’ve become an event that people look forward to. People came from far and wide. They realize that the bargains and
merchandise quality are hard to beat.
Coverage from local papers was a great help in getting out the Rummage
Sale message.”
The Board
of Directors and staff of Black River Good Neighbor Services thank community
members for the many donations of clothing, house wares and furniture. Thank you to the many volunteers who
worked many days, long hours, and traveled great distances to help. Thank you to the many community minded
individuals who baked goods and donated them for sale. A special thank you goes
to the ladies who catered healthy and delicious food daily to the volunteer’s
lunch. The Board also thanks Okemo Mountain for providing clothing racks for
the sale items.
Peter
LaBelle said “None of this could have happen without the generous donation of
the buildings by the Fletcher Foundation and the Fletcher Farm School of Arts
and Crafts. We have the best volunteers and Board
Members who donate an amazing number of hours, and we appreciate all of those
in and out of our community who believe in and support our mission”.
The money
raised will help cover fuel, food, rent, and utility assistance for those who
qualify in Ludlow, Belmont, Mt. Holly, Proctorsville, Cavendish and Plymouth.
To make
donations, to volunteer or for assistance, please call Audrey Bridge at
802-228-3663 or visit the Food Shelf & Thrift Store at 37B Main Street in
