The expansion of the designation includes adding 14 towns. At 138 miles, it is currently Vermont’s second largest byway. The largest is the Connecticut River Byway. Brattleboro Reformer

Drug Take Back Day is April 27: On Saturday, April 27th, 2013 from 10:00am-2:00pm numerous Vermont Law enforcement Agencies, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will host a “Drug Take Back” Day! The focus of this Drug Take Back Day is to offer free, safe and convenient disposal for unused prescription medications. Over 26 sites throughout Vermont will be open to the public and offer proper disposal of prescription medications. Participants will not be asked any questions about their medical health or other personal information. The public is asked to use this day to clear their homes of unwanted medications. Flushing medications are not a recommended method of disposal. FMI: www.vsp.vermont.gov
Springfield Biomass Plant Gets Permit: The proposed 35-megawatt North Springfield wood-fired power plant received an air permit from the state April 19, which the state said would include state-of-the-art pollution control equipment. Rutland Herald, 4/20/13

Vermonters to Pay More for Gas and Diesel Soon: On Wednesday, members of the House and Senate reached agreement on a compromise transportation bill. It covers three years, and will raise the effective gas tax by 6 cents this May, and the diesel tax by 2 cents come July. Lawmakers say the tax is just a patch. They're looking to Washington, D.C., for a long-term solution. Federal rates haven't changed for 21 years. Taxes currently cost Vermonters about 45 cents per gallon of gas-- 27 cents of which is due to Vermont. Under the new plan, that tax will go to 51 cents on every gallon of gas. WCAX

Voice to Text Just as Dangerous to Drivers as Texting: Using voice to send text messages while driving is just as dangerous as texting with fingers, with driver response times significantly delayed no matter which method was used, a study released on Tuesday showed. "In each case, drivers took about twice as long to react as they did when they weren't texting," Christine Yager, who headed the study, told Reuters. "Eye contact to the roadway also decreased, no matter which texting method was used." Reuters

4. CHANGES AT GLIMMERSTONE PUB AND RESTAURANT
The owner of Glimmerstone has announced the following changes to the Pub and Restaurant:
I will not be reopening the pub or casual fine dining restaurant at Glimmerstone.  I have had one year of historical data as to the overhead costs to run Glimmerstone and although I have a great following, the revenue is not high enough to cover the overhead.

I will be running events on the patio and the barn and in the dining rooms, those will be advertised shortly.  The first event will be a Sunday Mothers Day Brunch where we will take reservations and have a set price.  These allow me to know how many people I will have to be able to determine appropriate staffing and food purchases and costs associated with those specific events.

I have had such a difficult time making this decision as I have loved serving the public over the last year but I do not want to get into the same situation that my predecessors have had where they have been financially broken here.  I am still going to offer overnight accommodations and events.
