1. Irene Recovery in Cavendish:

With the first anniversary of tropical storm Irene rapidly approaching, there are a number of questions being asked, particularly about funds. Many of the town projects are completed, and, as reported at the monthly Select Board meetings, the cost to rebuild the town is estimated to be about $3.5 million, with the town responsible for less than 5% of the total cost.

While Cavendish was fortunate to have all of their homeowners back home by late January, issues with yard work, house repair and, finding that items that survived the flood really aren’t usable, continue.

The Cavendish Irene Relief fund has distributed all of its funds.

Money raised from the sale of VT Strong license plates and other statewide efforts are being given to the Long Term Recovery Committees (LTRCs). Nine LTRCs have been established across the state to coordinate services and resources to address the needs of flood-affected individuals and families. The committees are made up of local voluntary agencies, faith and community-based organizations, local government, and members of the private sector. The LTRCs are using members of their groups to distribute funds in the communities they serve. For Cavendish, the Precision Valley Disaster Recovery Committee is distributing funds via the case managers at Black River Good Neighbor (http://www.brgn.org; 228-3663) and SEVCA (http://www.sevca.org 800-464-9951). If you are interested in these funds, you will need to complete an application with one of these organizations.

If you have received money from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) you need to use the money according to instructions given by them. Recipients of these funds should always keep the receipts for three years. Random audits may be made to confirm funds were spent properly.

Those who are having issues with financial planning can receive free help from the Financial Planning Association of Northern New England 603-228-1231, nnefpa@cornerstoneam.com or

The Cavendish Irene Recovery Resources handout has been updated and includes additional resources. This is available on-line. PDF copies are available by e-mailing margoc@tds.net and print versions can be obtained at the town office.

The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association invites everyone to spend an evening listening to the sounds of Sensible Shoes on the Proctorsville Green on Wednesday, August 1st at 6:00 p.m. sponsored by Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company.

Sensible Shoes is one of Vermont’s favorite dance bands. ASCAP award-winning songwriter, keyboard player and singer Barbara Blaisdell brings her powerful New Orleans-inspired rhythm piano to the stage. Lead guitarist and singer Tim Utt is widely known as one of Vermont's most gifted players. Pooh Sprague, on bass, guitar and vocals, is a musical master who has played with the Shoes for years. 6. Berkshire Bank Foundation Provides Grant to LPCTV:

For the second year in a row, the Berkshire Bank Foundation has provided a $1000 grant to LPCTV. This year’s award is to help the community television station complete the Phase 1 build-out of its new facility, in the Ludlow Community Center complex (next to Black River Good Neighbor Services, in the former National Guard Armory “tank barn”).

Berkshire Bank’s Ludlow Branch Manager Leslie Lever delivered the check on a recent morning to newly-elected LPCTV Board member David Almond and Executive Director Patrick Cody. LPCTV’s Phase 1 construction began in January and included the build-out of the perimeter walls, one bathroom, and the HVAC system, all of which has been completed. Working with Wright Construction and Claudio Veliz Architects, the station now prepares to build-out the community TV & performing arts studio, which is the most centerpiece to the facility, and the final component to Phase 1 construction.

Executive Director Patrick Cody explained that LPCTV’s building project was broken into three phases, and that the station could move in once Phase 1 is completed. “We are thrilled to have the continued support of Berkshire Bank”, he said. “This grant gets us closer to the goal for building-out the studio, finishing Phase 1, and moving in. It’s great have the backing of Berkshire through this process”.

The studio is the final component to Phase 1 construction; once the fundraising goal for the studio is met, construction will commence. Upon completion of the studio, LPCTV will be able to move-in and resume operations, while raising funds for Phases 2 and 3 build-out.

2013 Photo Contest: The Okemo Valley Chamber of Commerce is conducting a photo contest of photographs taken in Andover, Cavendish, Chester, Ludlow, Mount Holly, Plymouth or Weston. Entries are due by midnight on Sept. 15. The Grand Prize will be on the cover of the Chambers 2013 Calendar, with the 11 runner up entries making up the remaining months.

Find a VT Swimming Hole with an App: Longtime outdoor enthusiasts Dave Lapointe and Torrey Tomasi, both 42, have created an app for mobile devices that allows users to locate Vermont’s precious swimming locations. The application, VtSwimmingHoles, allows users to track swimming holes using GPS and functions as a community forum about a growing list of more than 30 Vermont swimming locations. Burlington Free Press

Hazard Mitigations are for VT Second Home Owners: The Hazard Mitigation Program is designed to mitigate or reduce hazards from floods in the future. The way it works is FEMA awards funding to towns to purchase damaged properties. There's additional money for the town to demolish the structures and create a green space that will never be built on again. So in the next big storm there'd be nothing to destroy. This program is available to all property owners, whether it’s a primary residence, rental or second home. VPR

Six Cavendish Properties Listed for Tax Sale: Six Cavendish properties were listed in the legal notice section of the July 18, 2012 Vermont Journal for “Notice of Tax Sale.” “Reference may be had to said deed for a more particular description of said lands and premises, as the same appears in the Land Records of the Town Of Cavendish. And so much of the lands will be sold at public auction at the Office of the Town Tax Collector, located at the Cavendish Town Office Building, 37 High St., Cavendish Vermont, on August 16, 2012 at 10 o’clock in the a.m., as shall be requisite to discharge said taxes together with costs and other fees allowed by law, unless the same be previously paid. Dated at Cavendish, Vermont this 5th day of July 2012” and signed by Richard F. Svec, Delinquent Tax Collector, Town of Cavendish.

2. Cavendish Concerts on the Green Continue with Gypsy Reel

The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association invites everyone to spend an evening having fun on the Proctorsville Green listening to the continuing summer music series on Wednesday, July 25th at 6:00 p.m. when CCCA presents Gypsy Reel. This concert is sponsored by Black River Produce.

For over twenty years they have been acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Gypsy Reel, in their own words, is not a rock band that Celts, but a Celt band that rocks. They play high energy, stirring music rooted in the Celtic tradition but garnered from the whole world.

This will be the third of five concerts that are held on consecutive Wednesday nights in July and August. On August 1st Sensible Shoes will perform, sponsored by Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company. And for the final concert of the summer on August 8th Voodoo Alien Blues Band will play, sponsored by CCCA.

CCCA encourages all area residents and visitors to join their friends and neighbors in front of the gazebo on the green.
